Josep Vicent

Born in Spain in 1970, Josep Vicent is now the Artistic Director-Principal Conductor of the "Jeunesses Musicales World Orchestra". After his conservatory training as percussionist and conductor, having obtained his degrees at the Conservatorio Oscar Esplá de Alicante (Suma Cum Laude) and at the Sweelinck Conservatorium Amsterdam (Uitvoerend Musicus), Josep Vicent has built an outstanding reputation as a conductor with a personal and young programming character and a unique integrative approach of influences from other cultures or styles.

He wrote multimedia spectacles for events like EXPO 98, Festival van Vlaanderen and organizations like The DALI Foundation, Festival de Santander..., and kept a close contact with many living composers like Ton de Leeuw, Iannis Xenakis (who invited him to conduct at his UNESCO Prize in Germany), Rafael Reina, Theo Loevendie, Klas de Vries, Ramon Ramos, Emmanuel Sejourne, A. Garcia Abril, Carles Santos...., who have dedicated many works included in his broad repertoire.

Josep has received several interpretation prizes and scholarships from: Spanish Culture Ministry, "Amsterdamse Fonds voor de Kunst, "Juventudes Musicales de España", Foreign Office Ministry (Direccion General de Rel. Culturales y Cientificas) and others.

In the last years Josep Vicent has kept a very active scheduale as guest conductor with: Orquesta de Barcelona I Nacional de Catalunya,Orquesta Sinfónica de Valencia, The King Singers, Orquesta Sinfónica del Mediterraneo, Orquesta Sinfonica de Cordoba, Synergy Ensemble, Nederlands Radio Metropool Orkest, Cor de Valencia, National Academy -The Contemporary Singers, Orquesta Pablo Sarasate de Pamplona, Orquesta Sinfonica Ciudad de Oviedo, Noordhollands Philharmonisch Orkest, Joven Orquesta Nacional de España, Orquesta Sinfonica de Radio Television Española

Josep Vicent was member of Jeunesses Musicales World Orquestra, Xenakis Ensemble, and Joven Orquesta Nacional de España (1987-1992). Between 1992 and 1998 he worked regularly as a percussionist with the Koninklijk Concertgebouw Orchestra under most renowned conductors. He was artistic director of the "Nits de la Mediterrània Festival" (1995, 2001) where he organized and performed "Los Conciertos por la Paz" of UNESCO's "Music and peace" program (1998, 1999, 2000). Mr. Vicent was principal conductor of ducht new music ensemble "The Interval Chamber" (Gaudeamus Foundation) (1996, 2000). and Orquestra de les Arts (Alicante) with whom he is now making a TV series on XX century repertoire.

Josep Vicent is artistic director of The Amsterdam Percussion Group, his advent started a new period of recognition for APG, touring trough Asia, Europe and America to more than 20 countries and organising especial music-events and festivals. In 1999 APG was recognized by Dutch government as an important cultural embassador and since then receaves Structural Founding and records for labels like Virgin records, Etcettera Records, Ensayo-RBA.

Recent conducting engagements, opera premieres

His opera debut was in Germany (Köln,1997) conducting Rafael Reina´s "WOLFLY", co-produced by the EEC and the Spanish Culture Ministry. He also conducted the European Premiere of Astor Piazzola's "María de Buenos Aires" (Taller Amsterdam, 2000), and opera production at festivals like: Donau Festival (Wenen), or Aquiten Festival (France). In 2001 conducted his version of Falla’s ballet AMOR BRUJO with singer Carmen Linares (2001). Music theatre productions of "La Voz Humana" by Poulenc with "Castello XXI Orquestra" (2002) and "Histoire du Soldat" by Stravinsky. The New opera for chamber orchestra, choire and gamelan ensemble, "The Golden Deer" by Cynta Wullur (2003-04). Josep Vicent realises the Mise Scene of his own productions with Amsterdam Percussion Group. In 2004 maestro Vicent had his "debut" at the Teatro Real in Madrid conducting Rossinis "Viaggio a Reims" and will premiere the new opera production at FORUM 2004 (Barcelona) and Festival de Perelada.
